Audacity ist ein Mehrspur-Audio-Editor für Linux/Unix, MacOS und Windows. Er wurde entwickelt für einfaches Aufnehmen, Abspielen und Bearbeiten von digitalen Audiodaten. Audacity enthält Digitaleffekte und Werkzeuge zur Spektralanalyse. Die Bearbeitungsfunktionen sind sehr schnell und bieten unbegrenztes Rückgängigmachen/Wiederholen.

Unterstützte Dateiformate sind Ogg Vorbis, MP2, MP3, WAV, AIFF und AU.

Denemo ist eine freie GUI für Programme zur Musiknotation für GNU/Linux, MacOS und Windows, mit der Sie schnell Notation eingeben können, die Denemo mit dem Musik-»Graveur« LilyPond setzt. Musik kann an der PC-Tastatur eingegeben oder über MIDI-Controller eingespielt oder akustisch in ein Mikrofon eingegeben werden, das an die Soundkarte Ihres Computers angeschlossen ist.

Fluidsynth ist ein Echtzeit-MIDI-Synthesizer, der auf den Soundfont-Spezifikationen sf2 und sf3 aufbaut. Das Programm kann aus (Echtzeit-) MIDI-Noten oder aus MIDI-Dateien Töne erzeugen. Lingot ist ein Stimmer für Musikinstrumente. Er ist präzise, einfach zu bedienen und hochkonfigurierbar. Ursprünglich für das Stimmen elektrischer Gitarren gedacht, kann er jetzt für jedes Instrument genutzt werden.

Er sieht aus wie ein analoger Stimmer mit einer Anzeige, die die relative Verschiebung zu einer bestimmten Note und deren Frequenz anzeigt.

LMMS kombiniert die Fähigkeiten eines Tracker-/Sequencer-Programms (Pattern-/Kanal-/Sample-/Song-/Effekt-Management) und die eines mächtigen Synthesizers und Samplers in einer modernen, benutzerfreundlichen und einfach zu bedienenden grafischen Benutzeroberfläche.

Die MCP-Erweiterungen implementieren eine Reihe von LADSPA-Erweiterungen, die den Klang von AlsaModularSynth erheblich verbessern.

The general (non-Drumline) sound font is available as musescore-general-soundfont Debian package, if you wish to reuse it with other synthesisers.) You can also load any sound font you prefer for a wider variety of sounds or for more realism.

MuseScore can import and export MIDI and MusicXML files, and it can also import from Capella and several other programs. MuseScore can upload scores to musescore.com, a score sharing site, and send scrolling sheet music videos to YouTube. In addition to the desktop software, you can rehearse “on the go” with MuseScore mobile apps (which do not support note entry, but many advanced playback functions). Note that all of these are commercial or otherwise non-free offers optionally integrated with, but not part of, the Free notation program. QSynth is a fluidsynth GUI front-end application written in C++ around the Qt toolkit. Eventually it may evolve into a softsynth management application allowing the user to control and manage a variety of command line softsynths but for the moment it wraps FluidSynth (http://www.fluidsynth.org).

GNU Solfege is an ear training program for X Windows written in Python, using the GTK+ 3.0 libraries. You can practice harmonic and melodic intervals, chords, scales and rhythms, and you can add new exercises using a simple plain text file format.

To use this software, you need some basic knowledge about music theory.

TuxGuitar is a multitrack guitar tablature editor and player written in Java-SWT. It can open GuitarPro, PowerTab and TablEdit files.

MuseScore can import and export MIDI and MusicXML files, and it can also import from Capella and several other programs. MuseScore can export to PDF, PNG, and other graphic formats, to WAV and other audio formats such as OGG Vorbis and MP3, or to GNU Lilypond for an alternative layout and print option.

MuseScore can upload scores to musescore.com, a score sharing site, and send scrolling sheet music videos to YouTube. In addition to the desktop software, you can rehearse “on the go” with MuseScore mobile apps (which do not support note entry, but many advanced playback functions). Note that all of these are commercial or otherwise non-free offers optionally integrated with, but not part of, the Free notation program.
